Dear Friends and family,
This has been one of the best weeks in the Mtc. I only have about 15 minutes to write, so I will try and focus only on the most important things. First off, this wednesday we got Cohai (new Missionaries that are in our zone) So on Wednesday they came in. But going back to Wednesday morning, I talked one on one (Coaching) with one of our best teachers named Brother Crandell) He really understands missionary work in Japan, and taught me a lot about how to become a great missionary. He, along with other teachers here,(most of the teachers here were quite literally considered the best missionaries in their missions, there is about 50 applicants per one spot to be a teacher here) but along with other teachers here, he explained to me all of these things that we work on. We work on Japanese, we work on teaching skills, we work on teaching people, etc. But all of those things line up and progress the most quickly if we think about, study and do everything we do because of Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is what we are sharing with people. Our purpose in coming to earth is to change and to become like God, and How do we do that? Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. The Atonement is not something you use when you feel you need to repent of something you did wrong, although it can be used do do so, but The Atonement is much more. As we depend on the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we become changed in ways that we could never change ourselves, because we can overcome, and become anything that God wants us to become through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. It is thorugh our faith in Jesus Christ, and his Atonement that we can become prepared to become like God. Please study Jesus Christ's life, and the Atonement. Please access the Atonement daily, think about it all the time, and remember that it is a catalyst for change. And we are always changing, the question is: Are we moving closer or farther from God?
Also mom, those Emails that you are getting are from our good friend Junichi! He is a "Gold tag investigator" which means that he is potentially a real investigator, but we know for sure that he isn't. haha. He will probably talk to you more after we leave, and tell you who he is and stuff. He is super awesome! He is from Japan, and is fluent in Japanese! Hess choro and I teach him every Wednesday for like an hour and a half! This Wednesday he ate lunch with us and watched us at gym too! He's the most nice person! It's awesome! During our lessons, he asks some super hard questions that we as church members know little about, Like "did God have any siblings?" and when were we all created as spirits? (we have to divert to english for some of those questions) haha.
Later that day we had our first Skype TRC(home evening/Member lesson sort of)!!! It was so awesome! We skyped this Japanese man: Taguchisan! We had been planning to talk about the role of the spirit in our lives and how to recognize and understand the promptings of the Holy Ghost, but after talking to him and trying to understand his needs we found out that he was divorced, he lives alone, he is 60, and that his daughter is doing very well, and is married to a great preisthood man, but that his son was a drug addict and had been in and out of prison for that past few years. I felt inspired to change the lesson to be about hope, which I had actually been studying a lot about this week! I started by sharing Moroni 7:41-42. We talked to him about the power of the Atonement, and I had written about ten sentences just as practice in Japanese for another lesson topic, and 3 of those sentences seemed to be perfectly worded for what I wanted to say to him. They seemed to be catered specifically to what he needed, and I wouldn't have been able to say them without having already ready. It was truly a miracle. It was the first lesson that we really were completely guided by the spirit, and were able to actually teach to someone's needs in a way that mattered a lot. After the lesson was over, (it was about a 40 minute lesson) The Teacher over the Skyping talked to us about our experience, and we told him a little bit about our experience, and he said this: "I have been doing this with these members for the past few months, and I know those things about Taguchisan, but no missionaries have ever known that he was divorced, has a drug addict son, and that he lives alone." It was really cool to hear. It is really hard to find the japanese people's needs, but when you do it is immensely rewarding. It was an amazing Experience.
Then Hess choro and I as zone leaders, and Pearson shimai as sister training leader, had a new missionary orientation with our new missionaries. It was super awesome! It was so cool to be able to share my testimony of obedience, and of the power of missionary work. The spirit was so strong! I wish I had more time, but I don't. I love you all!!!
Love, Elder Conover
